Discover San Pablo City: A Quick Getaway from Manila

BY: JOANA KUZNETSOVA

Hidden Valley Springs

Looking for a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of Manila? A day trip to San Pablo City in Laguna, might just be the perfect escape.

Why Choose San Pablo City?

San Pablo City, often referred to as the “City of Seven Lakes”. It’s a charming destination located in the heart of Laguna province. About 2 to 3 hours away from Manila by car. Its proximity to the capital makes it an ideal destination for a quick day trip. The city offers a variety of attractions, from scenic lakes to historical sites.

Getting to San Pablo City from Manila

The most convenient way to reach San Pablo City from Manila is by private car. Drive along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), take the Batangas exit, then follow the signs toward San Pablo. The total travel time is usually around 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

Alternatively, if you don’t have access to a car, you can take a bus (about 180 PHP) from the Buendia terminal going to Lucena. From the San Pablo City bus terminal, take a tricycle (about 30 PHP) to SM San Pablo. From SM you can take a jeepney to Alaminos city by taking Tanauan, Sto. Tomas, or San Felix. From Alaminos city hire a tricycle driver to take you to Hidden Valley Springs and back for the day (Total 600 PHP).

Hidden Valley Springs

Nestled within a private nature reserve, Hidden Valley Springs is a hidden gem.

  • Natural Hot Springs: The main attraction of Hidden Valley Springs is, of course, the hot spring pools. Underground volcanic activity naturally heats the water, and the resort offers several spring-fed pools with varying temperatures.
  • Lush Tropical Forest: The resort is set amidst a lush tropical rainforest, offering guests a chance to connect with nature. Walking through the resort, you’ll encounter vibrant flora, giant ferns, and crystal-clear streams. The cool air and serene environment are perfect for nature lovers and anyone seeking a peaceful escape.
  • Waterfall: Hidden Valley Springs is home to a stunning waterfall. To get there its an easy-to-moderate hiking trail that will lead you deeper into the forest. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes for this outdoor adventure. You can take a refreshing dip in the cool water or simply relax and enjoy the calming sounds of nature.
  • Relaxing and Unplugging: One of the best aspects of Hidden Valley Springs is its ability to make you disconnect from the stresses of daily life. There is no mobile signal in certain areas!
  • Free lunch buffet included with the day access (2,800 PHP per person)

Explore the Seven Lakes of San Pablo

After enjoying Hidden Valley Springs, make your way back to San Pablo city (call the tricycle driver to take you to the Alaminos city jeepney terminal and take a jeepney to San Pablo city). San Pablo City is renowned for its seven scenic lakes!

  • Lake Sampaloc: The largest of the seven lakes, it’s a great spot for a leisurely walk along the shore during sunset.
  • Lake Pandin: A picturesque, serene lake surrounded by lush forests. You can take a relaxing bamboo raft ride with local guides who will even provide a “boodle fight” (a traditional Filipino dining experience) for a lake-side picnic. Rates are 1,500 PHP for 2, 1,800 PHP for 3, and 550 PHP per person for groups of 4 or more.
  • Lake Yambo: A quiet, hidden gem right next to lake Pandin that’s perfect for a more tranquil visit. The place is not as commercialized, so it offers an escape into nature.

If time permits, visit all seven lakes (or at least a few), as each one has its own charm and beauty.

Discover the History and Culture of San Pablo

After checking out the lakes explore some of San Pablo’s historical landmarks and cultural sites.

Located at the city center, San Pablo Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in Laguna. Its beautiful colonial-era architecture make it a must-visit.

If you have some extra time and want to immerse yourself further into Filipino culture, consider a quick side trip to Villa Escudero Plantations and Resort (around 20 minutes away from the city center). It’s an agricultural heritage resort where you can experience traditional Filipino rural life. Take a carabao cart ride, visit the museum, and enjoy lunch served by the river at their unique waterfall dining experience. It’s a fun and educational stop for all ages.

Dinner

  • Sulyap Gallery Café: This charming café is housed in a beautifully restored heritage building, offering an intimate and rustic ambiance. You can expect to find favorites like sinigang na baboy, crispy pata, and bicol express, all served with fresh ingredients and expert attention to detail. Don’t miss their signature kare-kare, which is rich, flavorful, and made with a variety of meats, from oxtail to tripe.

By around 8:00 PM, it’s time to head back to Manila. You’ll likely arrive back in the city by 10:00 PM, feeling refreshed and satisfied after a day full of nature, culture, and incredible food.

Tips for a Successful Day Trip

  • Leave Early: To make the most of your day, leave Manila early in the morning, around 5 AM to avoid traffic. This will give you ample time to explore Hidden Valley Springs, enjoy the hot springs, and explore the local area.
  • Bring Essentials: Pack essentials like a towel, sunscreen, shampoo/conditioner, comfortable footwear for walking, and a hat or sunglasses. Don’t forget your swimwear, as you’ll definitely want to enjoy the pools.
  • Book in Advance: Hidden Valley Springs is a popular spot, especially on weekends and holidays, so it’s a good idea to book your visit ahead of time (sometimes they don’t answer so you can always do a walk-in on a weekday).
  • Cash: Some places around San Pablo city, including the resort, may only accept cash, so it’s always a good idea to bring enough cash for the trip.

Final Thoughts

A day trip to San Pablo City offers a perfect combination of outdoor adventures, cultural exploration, and culinary delights. Whether you’re exploring the tranquil lakes, historic landmarks, or indulging in delicious Filipino dishes, you’re sure to leave with lasting memories.

Pro Tip: If you want to extend your visit, consider staying overnight at one of the local resorts, especially near the lakes or in historical areas like Villa Escudero. That way, you can enjoy an even more relaxed pace and experience everything San Pablo has to offer.
