Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is a city full of energy, culture, history, and delicious food. While the traffic can be overwhelming at times, Manila is packed with attractions that make it well worth the trip, whether you’re visiting for the first time or rediscovering your own city. A weekend in Manila offers the perfect mix of historical exploration, shopping, dining, and relaxation.
If you’re planning a weekend trip to the capital, here’s a curated itinerary to help you make the most of your two days in Manila.
Day 1: History, Delicious Food, and Nightlife
Morning: Historical Landmarks in Intramuros
Start your weekend trip with a journey through the heart of Manila’s history, Intramuros, also known as the Walled City. This charming district is home to some of the oldest structures in the country and offers a glimpse into the country’s colonial past.
- Fort Santiago: Begin your day at this iconic fort where José Rizal, the national hero, was imprisoned before his execution. You can explore the fort’s beautiful gardens and learn about its historical significance through informative exhibits.
- San Agustin Church: Just a short walk from Fort Santiago, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the oldest stone church in the Philippines. Its Baroque architecture and impressive interiors will transport you to a different time.
- Manila Cathedral: An iconic church with a rich history dating back to the Spanish era.
- Casa Manila Museum: This museum is housed in a restored colonial mansion that showcases the lavish lifestyle of Manila’s upper class during the 19th century.
If you’re feeling adventurous, consider a kalesa (horse-drawn carriage) ride around Intramuros while the tour guides talk about the history of the place.
Lunch: Binondo (Manila’s Chinatown)
After immersing yourself in history, it’s time to visit Binondo, the world’s oldest Chinatown. Here, you can sample Filipino-Chinese fusion dishes.
- Siopao (steamed buns) and Siomai (dumplings) from popular restaurants like Wai Ying and Eng Bee Tin are a must-try.
- Lomi, a comforting noodle dish, is a favorite here.
- Hopia, a delicious pastry, makes for a great dessert after your meal.
You can either explore on your own or opt for a food tour in Binondo for a more organized experience. It’s a great way to discover hidden food gems while learning about the area’s cultural history.
Afternoon: Visit Rizal Park
After lunch, head to Rizal Park, Manila’s iconic green space that honors the life and legacy of Dr. José Rizal. The park is large and features monuments, gardens, and several spots where you can relax.
- Rizal Monument: The centerpiece of the park, this monument commemorates the life and death of the Philippines’ national hero, Dr. José Rizal.
- Chinese and Japanese Gardens: For a peaceful retreat, these gardens offer serene walking paths, beautiful ponds, and a quiet escape from the bustling city.
Evening: Sunset at Manila Bay
A weekend in Manila isn’t complete without watching a beautiful sunset over Manila Bay. Head to Baywalk and enjoy the view as the sun sets behind the horizon. Afterward, you can:
- Head to one of the many restaurants along Harbour Square or Roxas Boulevard. Restaurants like The Aristocrat and Dampa offer excellent seafood with a view of the bay. You can enjoy fresh catches like sinigang na baboy (pork in sour broth) and grilled fish, all while taking in the sunset.
Discover the Nightlife in Bonifacio Global City (BGC)
No trip to Manila is complete without experiencing the vibrant nightlife. After your day of exploration, if you’re craving an all-out dance party with great DJs, high-energy crowds, and a luxurious atmosphere, Xylo at The Palace in BGC is where the magic happens.
- Address: Uptown, 9th Ave, Taguig, Metro Manila, Philippines
- Opening Hours: Xylo opens late, usually around 11:00 PM and runs until early morning (4:00 AM or later, depending on the night).
Day 2: Shopping and Culture
Morning: Visit the National Museum Complex
Start your second day by diving deeper into Philippine culture and history. Head to the National Museum Complex, located near Rizal Park.
- National Museum of Fine Arts: Admire classic Filipino masterpieces, including “Spoliarium” by Juan Luna, and discover works by other celebrated Filipino artists.
- National Museum of Anthropology: Learn about the indigenous cultures and traditions of the Philippines, with displays of traditional costumes, tools, and rituals.
- National Museum of Natural History: Explore the rich biodiversity of the Philippines, featuring exhibits on the country’s flora and fauna, as well as geological wonders.
The best part? Entrance to these museums is free!
Lunch: Mall of Asia (MOA)
After a morning of cultural exploration, treat yourself to some retail therapy and a hearty lunch at Mall of Asia (MOA), one of the largest malls in the world.
- Shopping: Whether you’re looking for trendy fashion, unique Filipino souvenirs, or electronics, MOA has it all. The mall is divided into several sections, including the main building and its outdoor areas, making it easy to explore. My favorite store is Kultura for souvenirs and pearl jewelry.
- SM By the Bay: If you prefer a more relaxed shopping experience, head to SM By the Bay, an outdoor extension of MOA located along the bay. Here you’ll find quaint shops and food stalls with beautiful views of Manila Bay, perfect for a leisurely stroll.
- For something more authentic, head to Divisoria Market, one of the best places to find unique souvenirs, local handicrafts, textiles, and affordable clothing. It’s a bit chaotic but offers an authentic shopping experience that you won’t find in MOA.

Makati’s dining scene is as diverse, offering everything from upscale restaurants to casual eateries and lively bars. Here are some excellent dinner spots to end your day:
